21. Olstad, Jan H. How to trace your ancestors in Norway. Free from the Norwegian Consulate. Lists the chief categories of records useful for family history research. Most of these records have been microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) and can be used through their local genealogical libraries. Free copies of this guide can be obtained from the Norwegian Consulate General in Minneapolis. Note particularly the addresses of the regional archives (statsarkiver). They will usually do preliminary checks (e.g. of church baptism or marriage records) without charge.

22. Passenger lists. You need to know port of arrival and approximate date. Passenger lists of vessels arriving at New York 1820-97 gives the reel number for specific arrival dates; microfilm can be ordered on interlibrary loan from the National Archives.

BYGDEBØKER AND LOCAL HISTORY BOOKS

Bygdeb¢ker are historical-genealogical books for a particular community in Norway. They will usually include a general history of the area with one or more volumes detailing the history of farm sites within the area. Stories will often include the genealogical heritage of the families residing on the farm sites. They are still being written for many parts of Norway. Also many communities whose bygeb¢ker are many years old are writing supplementary volumes to bring them up to recent times. The books many be ordered from Cappelen, Oslo, Norway. Excellent collections of bygdeb¢ker can be found in the libraries at St. Olaf College, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, Concordia College (Moorhead), Luther College (Decorah), University of North Dakota (Grand Forks). Most can also be borrowed on interlibrary loan through your local library.
